The Slovak Republic (Slovakia) borders on the Czech Republic and Austria to the west, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east and Hungary to the south.

Between 1918 and 1982, the Slovak Republic was an integral part of Czechoslovakia, a former Soviet satellite state.

On January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully split into the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic (Slovakia).
